I do not live in the Wilmington area anymore, so I am late in learning of Jim’s death last summer. I met Jim when he was a researcher at the Hagley Museum and Library where I worked. Jim was working on genealogy, and he was wonderfully helpful getting me on board to research my own family history. I am grateful for that and for the friendship that resulted. He was a wonderful guy who adored his wife and daughters. His face almost always held a smile, and he was a good companion. My sympathy to his dear family who will cherish him forever. He will be missed by them and his friends.

I remember in 1983 my daughter, Erica, who was a premie and Doris Rooney aka
(Mommy Dot) watcher her while I went to California for business. Then I would pick up Erica after work and there was James Rooney (daddy Jim). He would always be in his recliner and we would always exchange jokes to each other while waiting for mommy Dot to bring Erica downstairs to leave. He was always very jovial and it was a pleasure to see him after a long day at work. He will be missed by friends and family alike.

It was great good fortune in the 1950's that I became an honorary member of the Rooney Family. As a youngster I spent many hours listening to Short Wave radio on our family farm in the South Pacific nation of New Zealand. Short-wave radio was the 1940's and 50's "internet". My letter to a Listeners' Mail Box was followed by one from Jim's young brother - the same age as me. I wrote to Bob not realising I was beginning a 65 year honorary membership of the Rooney Family also gaining my "Big Brother Jim".- My first visit and stay with the Rooney family happened in 1963. I have been back several times since.
I am truly grieving the loss of my honorary big brother and my love goes out to all the extended Rooney Family - Love from Barry in New Zealand.

Although I never met your dad, I know how much you loved and cherished him. Hearing this news hit me because of this. So many people go through life without the love of a parent and it sounds like he was a gem of one. I am so sorry for your loss and hope that you all can find peace in the fact he is living eternally with our Lord.

I didn't know Mr. Rooney personally but I am blessed to know his dear sweet daughter Debbie, Sam and Lizzie. I know Mr. Rooney touched the lives and hearts of so many people. Mr. and Mrs. Rooney raised a beautiful, compassionate and wonderful daughter and that isn't by accident. Love breeds love and I know from the way Debbie spoke of both her parents, there was a lot of love in the family. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Mrs. Rooney, I hope for you comfort and peace going forward. I will keep your entire family in my prayers.

Debbie, although I never met your dad, I can only imagine what a great guy he must have been, since he raised the wonderful daughter in you! Having lost my dad unexpectedly in January, I understand what you are all facing. Please know that you and your family remain in my thoughts and prayers. Cherish your memories, they will get you through the days and weeks to come.
