Obituary of William E. Bergey
William E. Bergey, age 79, of Chadds Ford, PA passed away peacefully on December 25th surrounded by his loving family. Born in Gowanda, NY, Bill resided in Chadds Ford, PA for 50 years with his wife, Micky. Bill graduated from Arkansas State University in 1969 where he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Arkansas State University ROTC Hall of Heroes where he had been a second lieutenant. In 1976, fans voted him the best player in A-State history, and his jersey was later retired in 1997. Bill was also added to the football Ring of Honor on display in Centennial Bank Stadium.
Bill was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals of the American Football League (AFL) in the 1969 draft. Bill played with the Bengals in the NFL until 1973. He subsequently signed with the Eagles the following year, where he played seven seasons until retiring in 1981. During his career, Bill was named to five Pro Bowls, was a two-time first-team All-Pro, and made one Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XV, which would be his final professional game. He is an inductee of the Eagles Hall of Fame and the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.
In addition to his parents, John Eugene Bergey and Lois Elizabeth Courtwright Bergey, he is preceded in death by his sister Virginia Lattimore. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Micky Kay Bergey, three sons, Jason Bergey (Tracy), Jake (Heather) Bergey, and Josh (Katie) Bergey, two siblings, Bruce (Carolyn) Bergey and Sylvia (Dennis) Ghromley and ten grandchildren, Brendan, Ruben, Bret, Austin, Caden, Kendell, Fabian, Taylor, Colton and Peyton.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 2nd, from 9:00-11:30 AM at the Brandywine Valley Church, 7 Mt Lebanon Road, Wilmington, DE 19803 followed by a Memorial service at noon. Burial will remain private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's memory may be made to either the American Cancer Society (cancer.org) or the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).
