I vividly remember witnessing Karen’s transition from tween to teen. As she embraced her journey away from the passions of a girl to those of a teenager.
No, no, no! Not Boys!
MUSIC !!!
I remember like yesterday when She came bouncing through the door with an animation and excitement I’d never noticed in her before. Her hands tightly gripping her first Monkees album.
Karen could not wait to play that .33 rpm vinyl disc of pure “Gold” for our listening pleasure.
I was significantly younger but upon hearing some songs I discovered I was familiar with the music.
The band’s pictures were on the album cover and I was fascinated by it. I can recall thinking
“Karen is crushing on The Monkees”.
Although I found them easy on the eyes myself I was much more focused on the fact that they were real people. I had never before made the connection between the sounds from mother’s VW size static filled box on the kitchen counter to actual people creating it.
I was hooked for life!
Karen subsequently relinquished her Barbie dolls and the few accessories available to the Barbie of the 60’s to me that day but she gave me something much more than she would ever understand.
My life long love for music. Music has been my friend and comforter since I was very young
In retrospect I feel blessed to have lived in a time when musical talent, skill and creativity was at it’s peak for all generations before and to come.
Oh I still enjoyed hours of play with Barbie and Ken in the makeshift “Barbie Dream Home” with rooms divided by string, yarn and chairs made of old cardboard jewelry boxes but nothing has meant more to me or touched my soul like music.
Thank you Karen.
Until we see one another again.
