Obituary of Joseph J. Sweeney, Sr.

Joseph J. Sweeney, Sr., age 86 of Aston, PA, died peacefully at home on May 16, 2021. Born to Christopher and Theresa (Bradley) Sweeney in Linwood, PA, he was a lifelong resident of Upper Chichester, PA. Joe was an Army Veteran prior to working as a Department Manager at Sears for over 30 years. Upon retirement, he worked at Snyder's Ace Hardware in Aston, PA. Joe was devoted to his Catholic faith and a member of St. John Fisher Catholic Church, where he also served as an usher. He was a graduate of St. James Catholic High School Class of 1952 and an active member of the St. James Alumni Association. As an avid Eagles fan, he and his son sat side by side at every home game for over 50 years, always hoping for a Super Bowl victory. Joe made the best of his long wait for that victory, and will be remembered by many for his generosity and culinary skills at the tailgates he hosted on "The Bus". In addition to his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his first wife, Elsie (Martin) Sweeney; son, Martin Sweeney; brother, Christopher Sweeney; stepson, Daniel Dougherty; and brother-in-law, Charles Martin. Joe is survived by his wife of 16 years, Mary Lou (Pyne) (Dougherty) Sweeney; children, Joseph J. Sweeney, Jr. (Joan) and Karen Koussis (Greg); stepdaughters, Colleen Scelsa (Michael) and Karen Strazdus (Steve); grandchildren, Damien Koussis and Nicholas Koussis, nine step-grandchildren, and two step-great grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Sunday, May 23, 2021, from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Pagano Funeral Home, 3711 Foulk Rd, Garnet Valley, PA, and Monday, May 24, 2021, at St. John Fisher Catholic Church, 4225 Chichester Ave, Boothwyn, PA from 9:30-10:15 AM, followed by a 10:30 AM Funeral Mass. Interment, SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, 1600 S Sproul Rd, Springfield, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph Sweeney's memory may be made to the St. James Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, 1499 E. 9th St., Eddystone, PA 19022.
