Dick and I were in the 35th Company for two years at U.S. Naval Academy and frequently played cards together. Our paths crossed again in 2018 at a couple of functions involving the Columbus (OH) chapter of USNA alumni. Dick gave an inspirational speech to incoming plebes at one gathering and joined me in attending at Navy football game at University of Cincinnati. Dick was definitely a man of strong faith. Like Dave Corley below, I was also a freshman at the United States Naval Academy assigned to the 35th company in June 1971. Rich was one of the firsties in the first group of Seniors in charge of our orientation to military life. Out of the 25+ or so firsties in the 35th Company, Rich is one of the few I truly remember. I viewed him as honest, sincere, and always thoughtful and fair. I am so very sorry to hear of his passing and offer prayers for those he leaves behind. Bo Clark USNA Class of 1975

My condolences to Dick’s family. I just learned of Dick’s passing. I first met him on 30 June, 1971, exactly fifty years ago tomorrow. Dick was my “firstie”, (first class midshipmen) squad leader for plebe summer at Annapolis. At the time, he was “Mister Frawley” to me and my classmates. Dick made an immediate impression on me as a tough, but fair-minded and resolute leader. He taught me that the key to learning how to be a leader was first learning how to serve with a kind and gracious heart. I remember his commitment to Navy’s lightweight crew team. Early morning runs and knowing when to push back from a 3,000 calorie meal required that commitment. Dick and his 35th company classmates helped me understand the reason for that commitment. I am forever indebted to him for that gift. Fair winds and following seas, Dick. Dave Corley, USNA ‘75, 35th company.

To Dick's memory and to his family who carries on his tradition of service to others, my heartfelt condolences in your moving on. This remembrance takes me back to our time serving at Marine Barracks 8th & I when you led the Camp David team and to our service together at the Camp David Accords between Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. As a fellow rugby competitor in Okinawa, I still have the Green rugby shirt hanging in my closet and still wear it on occasion (a little tight but doable). The Orwan Bay Bombers is a memory I cherish as we competed with several Japanese teams. Fare winds and following seas until we meet again and compete on the same team. Ron Guilliams 21st Co. To all of Rick's family and friends. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Rick and I were roommates and best friends at the Academy for the entire 4 years. He was our best man at our wedding two days after graduation and he came to my US Navy retirement ceremony 30 years later. He was a funny and very giving person and would do anything to help a friend. One of my funniest memories of our years at USNA was listening to Rick try to speak Chinese, which was one of the courses he took. I knew when we graduated that he would be a fine Marine Officer and would be well-liked by his troops, which I am sure he was. We will dearly miss him at our upcoming 50-year reunion. Judy, I am so sorry to hear about Dick's passing. I last talked to Dick 10 years ago at the 40th reunion but he failed to show for the 45th. Dick, Gary Evans and I were roommates several times at the Academy, and we lived through his battles to make weight for the lightweight crew team. We wish you all the best, and would love to send flowers for the service in Michigan, and the Naval Academy class leadership would like to reach out to you as well. Tal - thank you for your post. My siblings and I enjoy hearing stories about our dad, especially from his days at the Academy which he spoke of fondly. We would love to hear from the Naval Academy class leadership ourselves. I will be in contact.

Condolences to Ricks family, as we have just learned of his passing today, and shocked after having a short conversation with him just a few weeks ago. I worked for Rick at McCain Ellios Foods in the early 90’s, and he became a special friend to me and my whole family ever since. Rick was brilliant in plant operations, having utilized his skills as a consultant several times over the year’s. There wasn’t a challenge Rick wouldn’t take on, applying his competitive work ethic, second to none! Rick was always special to our kids, from playing wrestling with them when they were little, to checking in for an update as they became adults..... and always showing up with flowers for my wife when he came for dinner! Our hearts are heavy, but know that Rick was a special person that God placed in our life, and we will miss him dearly! Chuck and Lesley Marble

My sincere condolences to your family. In our two years together, Dick and I spent many hours/miles on the Severn, and in 35th Co (I was '73). I'll never forget the "Head of the Charles regatta" in October of '71. We hit the starting bouy on the 1st stroke and the boat's "set" was entirely thrown off. Then from behind me a BOOMING voice shouted "Let's get it back". It was Dick's of course. We immediately responded, and rowed the best race of our careers. We ended up winning thd HOC (the only Navy 8 ever to do so, before or since, I believe), in a (then) record setting time. An admired an respected friend, Dick was was an inspiration to us all. He will be sorely missed.

James- Thank you so much for sharing these great pictures. I recently gave my dad the book The Boys in the Boat and he enjoyed it so much. I'm sure it took him right back to his days in the shell and his crewmates.
