Obituary of Clement N. Mattera

Clement N. Mattera, age 86 of Broomall, PA passed away on December 27, 2018 at Penn Medicine Hospice. Born in Philadelphia and raised in South Philadelphia, he resided for the past 36 years in Broomall, previously residing in Drexel Hill, PA. Clement spent much of his 36 years at IBM as a system engineer, responsible for a few of company's most important Philadelphia clients: Bell Telephone and the Pennsylvania Railroad. Late in his career, he transitioned from mainframe systems to a primary focus on PC support, retiring in 1990. Clement graduated from South Philadelphia High School class of 1950 and was a Corporal in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division during the Korean War. During the war he served as a helicopter mechanic at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and was honorably discharged in 1953. Clement was a voracious reader and almost completely self-taught, having attended Temple University for one year. His wide range of interests included history, philosophy, physics, biology, computer science, and engineering. Clement particularly loved working with wood and other materials. Clement was a member of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church in Broomall, PA. Clement is preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Susan DiBlasio Mattera, second wife Dolly Dehnick Mattera who died in 2005, and first wife Pauline Capizzi Mattera who died in 1980, and daughter Susan Mattera who died in 1964. He is survived by his sister, Marie Mattera; his three children: Nicholas (Janice) Mattera, Mark (Angela) Mattera and Marie (James Atkinson) Mattera; five grandchildren: Paulette (Gary) Young, Juan Kurtzman, Julianne (Kevin) Zwick, Jaclyn Mattera and Matthew (Heather) Mattera; and two great grandchildren: Nicholas Clement Young and Chase Clement Young. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 9:30 to 10:15AM at St. Bernadette of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, 1035 Turner Avenue, Drexel Hill, PA followed by funeral mass at 10:30AM. Interment will be at S.S. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA. Donations in his memory may be made to Penn Medicine, 3535 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
