Obituary of Joyce J. Childress

Joyce "Jay" Childress, age 71, of Bethel Twp., PA passed away peacefully on June 25, 2018. Born and raised in Middletown Twp., PA, Jay has resided over 50 years in Bethel Twp., PA. A web developer, Jay had a passion for computers, photography, and service clubs in the area. In her earlier years, she enjoyed Roller Skating and entering skating competitions and also taught Photography at Delaware County Community College. Jay is a member of the Liberty Presbyterian Church where she served in many capacities. She also belonged to the Bethel Twp. Preservation Society and the Newtown Square Train Museum. Jay was known for her artistic abilities and warm heart as she was an advocate for rescuing parrots. However her passion for being a Rotarian remained number one throughout the years. Jay joined the Exton Frazier Rotary Club on Dec 1, 1989 and remained a member until she moved to the Glen Mills Rotary Club in 2005. In 2016, Jay moved to the Glen Riddle Club. Jay was selected "Rotarian of the Year in District 7450" in 2006 and achieved Paul Harris Recognition in 2011. She served as District administrator from 2007 to 2012 and managed the District website, and worked as co-editor of monthly newsletter from 2005 until 2014, and again during the 2017-2018 Rotary year. Throughout the years, she was also photographer for many District events and fundraisers which were featured on the website and in the District newsletter including the Chichester Rotary Annual Golf Outings. She created the original design for the District logo and designed Rotary information banners for use by the District and by the Clubs at Rotary events. She produced numerous program books for District Conferences and training sessions and served as registration chair for same. Her soft smile will be sadly missed by her family, friends, fellow Rotarians and her church family. In addition to her parents, Bryce and Hilda Shutte Terry, she is preceded in death by her son, Matthew Childress and a brother, Johnny Terry. Jay is survived by her husband of 55 years, Elbert "Slim" Childress, 2 daughters, Debra (Mark) Kozak & Gabrielle Childress and a granddaughter, Cassy Phillips. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 2, 2018, from 10-11AM at Concord Liberty Presbyterian Church, 256 Bethel Rd., Glen Mills, PA followed by a Memorial Service at 11AM. Interment will remain private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jay's memory may be made to the  Concord Liberty Presbyterian Church at the above address.
