Obituary of Paul A. Arts

Paul A. Arts, MD, 86, of Garnet Valley, PA, passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017. Born in Clifton, New Jersey, he was the fifth child of John and Josephine (Vasilyk) Arts on January 19, 1931. Paul graduated from Clifton High School and was drafted into the Army in 1952 and assigned to the Medical Corps and it was first introduction to his future career. In the Army, Paul first went to Japan for advanced medical training and was eventually assigned to the 25th Infantry Division during the Korean conflict as a platoon medic; he was then transferred to a battalion aid station where he spent the rest of his tour. It was there that he was encouraged by his battalion surgeon to pursue medicine. Paul was discharged from the Army in 1953. After the Army, Paul enrolled in Fairleigh Dickinson University where he graduated summa cum laude in 1957, the same year he married his wife of Rose (Senatore). The couple was married for 60 years. After college, Paul entered the Seton Hall College of Medicine and they had two children. After graduation, he interned at St. Joseph's Hospital in Denver and after returning after a year, started a private family practice first in Plainfield, NJ, and later in Watchung, NJ, where they settled and had two more children. While in practice, Paul taught students from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick as an Associated Professor of Family Medicine. He was a fellow of the American Board of Family Practice and a Senior Attending at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. He retired from practice in 2003 and moved to Garnet Valley, PA. He is fondly remembered for his dedication to his patients and his family, his big personality and his love of skiing, sailing, fishing and travel. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings and his wife Rose who passed last October. He survived by his son Michael and his wife Susan of Racine, WI; his daughter Maureen and her husband David Griffitts of Glen Mills, PA; his daughter Megan and her husband Jon Evans of Odenton, MD; and his son Matthew of Philadelphia, PA. He is also survived by five granddaughters: Shannon Arts of Falls Church, VA, Madison and Mackenzie McKenna of Glen Mills, PA, and Finley and Ryan Evans of Odenton, MD. Paul's remains will be cremated and there will be a memorial service in May.
