Obituary of Elizabeth C Carter

Elizabeth “Betsy” C. Carter, age 100, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on July 18, 2024, at Stonegates Retirement Community.

Born in New Brunswick, NJ in 1923, Betsy was the daughter of Michael J. and Margaret Hess Callahan. She was raised in Wilmington, DE, and graduated from Wilmington Friends School. She then attended Wheaton College and Bryn Mawr for her undergraduate degree and later University of Pennsylvania with a degree in Occupational Therapy.

Betsy briefly lived in Cleveland, OH after graduating, however decided that she did not enjoy being an Occupational Therapist. She returned to Wilmington where she took Administrative Assistant classes. She briefly worked at the DuPont Company and then moved to the Washington D.C. area where she worked as an Administrative Assistant for Atlantic Research doing work related to the early days of Rockets. She thoroughly enjoyed this. She met her husband in Washington DC and started her family there. After losing her husband while her children were young, Betsy moved back to Wilmington to be closer to family. As a single mother, Betsy worked in the libraries in the schools and later worked as an Administrative Assistant at Delaware Technical and Community College. After retiring she was a longtime volunteer at Christiana Care.

In her younger years, Betsy enjoyed sailing in the summer with her siblings in Chestertown, MD. As an adult, she enjoyed boating and sailing on the lakes in New England with her friends and family. She also enjoyed traveling. She went to Hawaii, Bermuda, Ireland, Switzerland to name a few places. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family, friends, and especially her grandchildren, Ricky and Heather. She was very involved with Ricky and Heather and always attended their sports games, school events and simply going to the pool in the summer with Rich, Maggie and the kids. She loved to read and could always be found with a book in her hand or listening to audio books in her later years.

In addition to her parents, Betsy was preceded in death by her siblings, Molly Sargent and Bill Callahan, her husband, John(Jack) Miles Carter, and her son, Bill Carter. She is survived by her daughter, Maggie (Rich) Evans, grandchildren, Ricky and Heather Evans, stepson Bob Carter and cousins, niece and nephews.

The family would like to extend thanks to all of the nurses and staff at Stonegates. The staff in Healthcare were like family to Betsy, and provided the highest level of care and compassion. In addition, the family would like to thank the AccentCare Hospice nurses and staff who provided additional comfort in her final days and thank you to all of the other aides that helped her throughout the years. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Christiana Hundred in the Chapel on Thursday, August 8th at 12:00pm 505 Buck Rd, Wilmington, DE 19807, followed by a celebration of life at a local restaurant.

Donations in her honor may be made to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Online condolences may be made by visiting www.paganofuneralhome.com.
