Obituary of Gary G. Whelan

Gary G. Whelan, age 79, of Kennett Square, PA passed away on November 16,2023 at University of Pennsylvania Hospital. He was born in Upland, PA, and raised in Bethel Township by his late parents, James P. and Lydia Crosgrove Whelan. Gary resided in Kennett Square for 9 years, previously residing in Chadds Ford, PA. Gary graduated from Media H.S. and later received his Bachelor's Degree from Temple University. Gary served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War receiving the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Gary was known as an entrepreneur and was a Developer of Commercial Real Estate. Devoted to his faith, Gary regularly attended Calvary Chapel Church. He was a member of Kennett Square Country Club, and a previous member of Radley Run Country Club. He also was a past member of the Brandywine Lions Club. In addition to his passion of golf, reading and cars, he enjoyed time with his family at his 2nd home in Hilton Head, SC. Gary is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sandra Guthrie Whelan, 2 daughters; Kimberly (Justin) Kierstead, and Sherri Donnell, 6 grandchildren; Jacob & Kailey Kierstead, Zakary, Kole, Sadie and Zoe Donnell, and 5 siblings; James Whelan, Marcia Randall, Denise Burroughs, Vernon Whelan, and Jeffrey Whelan. A visitation for Gary will be held on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 from 10AM-11AM at Elam United Methodist Church, 1073 Smithbridge Rd, Glen Mills, PA followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11AM.
