Obituary of Karlis Ulmanis
Karlis Ulmanis, age 62 of Garnet Valley, PA passed away peacefully on November 6, 2023 surrounded by his family at home. Born to Mintauts and Valda Ulmanis, Karlis grew up on Forest Lake with his younger sister, Aida, and brother, Martin. He recalled a childhood full of adventures around the lake. He spent his summers fishing, sailing, and taking trips with family to Wisconsin and his winters sledding, skating, and playing pickup hockey on the frozen lake.
After graduating from University of Illinois with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Karlis moved to Los Angeles to design missile systems at Hughes Aircraft Company, where he met the love of his life, Linda. Together they raised three children, Eric, Alexis, and Brooke. He loved learning and went on to earn his MBA from USC which led to a transition to a career in investment management at Dupont in Delaware, which he retired from in 2023.
Karlis was a devoted family man who loved supporting his children’s activities. The family spent much of their vacation time in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Bethany Beach, Delaware, and visiting family across the US and Latvia.
Throughout his life he enjoyed Boy Scouts which he grew up being part of with his father and has passed on to his son. Karlis earned Eagle Scout as part of Eagle Class of 1976, went backpacking at Philmont Scout Ranch twice, was awarded the National Outstanding Eagle Scout Award in 2020, and was a mentor to many.
Karlis enjoyed woodworking and problem-solving, which he poured into his community. Karlis helped manage the Lutheran Community Services endowment fund, chaired the endowment committee for the Cradle of Liberty Boy Scout Council, volunteered at Good Works, and much more.
