I've known Sal for 64 yrs. He always came to visit us at christmas and always brought me a gift because he was my godfather. When I got married and had a daughter he brought my daughter a Cabbage Patch Doll when they were so popular that no one else could get one. He knew people. Always had great memories of Sal.

Sal and I go back to first grade. He lived on the other side of ninth street. We graduated from Ridley Park High School in1951. Our paths crossed many times, mostly at class reunions, but he was always Sal the Nice Guy. He had a great admiration for my late husband. My Jack was a captain of some of the boats coming in and out of Sun Oil docks. Last December we met once again at Mass in Immaculate Conception. He recognized my voice and we had a nice chat about how lucky we were growing up in Hook. He once again brought up a story of how Jack helped him navigate up some creek. It's one of those times I will remember. I know our mutual friend Jack Buscemi will also miss him. My deepest sympathy to his family. May he rest in peace with Marie, the love of his life.

As a fellow member of the Saint James Alumni Choir, I am in awe of Sal's devotion. Like me, Sal is a "Gentile" and not a graduate of Saint James. Of all the men who gathered together to sing the Lord's praise, Sal had the most to do to make the rehearsals and participate in the Masses and in the prayer services. Yet, he was consistently there. And he never complained. In fact, he was always ready with a friendly greeting and a joke to tell. Sal had a great sense of humor. He is an inspiration to me and to all of us. Dad was a “blue collar” guy with a great mind and heart. As he passed away his son and four daughters were at his bed side and each were caressing him in his final hours. If I didn’t know him and his family I would have said the object at the center of the scene Saturday night was a very lucky man. But it wasn’t luck. Dad lived a charmed life that he built with his own hands.
For most of Dad’s career he was a supervisor and trainer but he was always a dock worker. The first time we met was in his kitchen. I was in his home to pick up his daughter for our second date. He was in his work clothes and a faint scent of oil and sweat was in the air. His short sleeves exposed tanned, strong arms and his eyes revealed intelligence. In the years to come I’d learn that he was one of those rare men who are at ease with everyone, regardless of class. Executives and professionals accepted and respected Sal as much as his fellow workers. He laughed with and assisted the wealthy and educated as readily as his co-workers and subordinates.
The perfect picture of Sal for the obituary would be him on the dock with a young engineer or new dock worker, both wearing hard hats and the younger man listening to Sal. The picture may not exist but a lot of men can remember the scene.
