Obituary of Henri F. Wendel
Dr. Henri F. Wendel, age 91, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully on September 18 at Forwood Manor Nursing Home. Henri was born in Shamokin, PA to Harry and Kathrine (Banaman) Wendel and his family moved to Chester, PA when he was young. He attended Archmere Academy, graduating in 1943. He entered the US Army in 1944 and trained as a captain in WW II, stationed in Hawaii. He used the GI Bill and began undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946. He graduated in 1949 and continued at their medical school, graduating in June 1953. During his undergraduate and graduate studies, Henri subsidized his tuition by working full time at the US Post Office in Chester, PA.
Henri entered private practice in family medicine in 1954, a vocation dedicated to a lifetime of serving others. Henri's associations where he maintained leadership roles included the Family Medicine Department at the Medical Center of DE, New Castle County Medical Society, Medical Society DE, American Academy of Family Practice, DE Academy of Family Practice and DE Academy of Medicine. Henri was extensively published in medical journals.
Henri was an extremely generous person who donated to various charities. He played violin and enjoyed reading, participating in Page Turner's Book Club. He owned thoroughbred horses that raced at Brandywine Race Track. He was an avid sports fan, attending many Flyers games. He enjoyed travel and was a wonderful husband, brother, father and grandfather.
Henri is survived by his wife, Gloria M. Wendel, his sister, Kathleen (James) Kerwin, children, Dr. Christopher (Claudia) Wendel, Gretchen Genello, Gregory (Diane ) Wendel, April (Ronald)Brozek, and Gloria (Michael) Aiello, his step-children, Maria Deysher (Michael Heins), Terri Ann (Jonathan) Bostocky and Anthony Deysher and his sister-in-law Meg Wendel. Henri has 7 grandsons and 1 great-grandson.
Henri is predeceased by his parents, his brother, Martin Wendel, his sister, Nancy Cariello and his first wife, Georgene Wendel.
Friends and family are invited to call at his viewing at the Pagano Funeral Home, 3711 Foulk Rd., Garnet Valley, PA on Thursday, September 22 from 8:30 to 9:45 AM to be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John Fisher, Boothwyn, PA at 10:30 AM. Interment will be private.
