Obituary of Leo Francis Hamilton, Jr.

Leo Francis Hamilton, Jr., age 95 of Glen Mills, PA passed away surrounded by his family on June 25, 2021 at home. Born in Chester, PA and raised in Chester and Woodlyn, PA, Leo resided for the past 14 years in the Maris Grove community in Glen Mills, PA, previously residing over 57 years in Springfield, PA.

Leo was a graduate from St. James High School, Class of 1943 and upon graduation, entered the Navy where he served during World War II and the Korean conflict. After his enlistment and basic training, the Navy assigned him to become an electrical engineer sending him initially to Villanova University and then to Yale University where he earned his BS degree in electrical engineering in 1946. As a Lieutenant, he served principally on high-speed transport ships deploying frogmen and supporting amphibious warfare in areas spanning from Japan to Greenland.

He became an electrical engineer and engineering manager for Philadelphia Electric for over 47 years, retiring in 1989. He was particularly proud of the contributions that his team and he made to the development of the transmission and distribution network for electricity which supported the growth of the Delaware Valley Region in the 1950 -1990 timeframe. A member of St. Cornelius Catholic Church and a former member of Holy Cross Church in Springfield, PA., Leo was a 4th degree in the Knights of Columbus de La Salle Council 590 in Springfield, PA. Leo liked to golf, enjoyed bowling, and loved time at the beach with his family, especially his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Leo Francis, Sr. and Catherine Conly Hamilton, Leo is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Smiley Hamilton, who passed away in 2002 and his son, Stephen Hamilton who passed away in 2009.

He is survived by his son, Leo Francis (Anna) Hamilton III, daughters, Margaret (Rudolph) Birney, Nancy (Stephen) Carbonetti, 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday June 30 from 9:30-10:45 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, 430 Valleybrook Road, Glen Mills, PA followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00AM. Interment will be in S.S. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA.
