Obituary of Anna E. Stephens

Anna "Nancy" Stephens passed away peacefully on April 28,2021, at the age of 86, after a brief illness, surrounded by her family. Nancy was born and raised in Philadelphia. She graduated from West Catholic High School in 1952, and then worked as an executive administrative assistant for Beneficial Bank. Upon marrying, she and her husband moved to Wilmington Delaware and started a family. After raising her three children, Nancy returned to her career as an administrative assistant, working at Cigna and retiring from there in 2000. In addition to her parents, Hugh J Friel and Sarah Handforth Friel, Nancy is preceded in death by her brother, James Friel. Nancy is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, William F Stephens, her three children, William S Stephens, (Jan), Mark T Stephens, (Noel Andrews), Susanne McGuire, (Michael), her sister, Sarah Lockwood, her grandchildren, Laura Schoff, Jillian Yetter, William S Stephens Jr., Hannah Detweiler, Sarah, Katelyn, Jessica Stephens, Grace and Riley McGuire, and her great grandchildren, Joseph, Kylie, Leah, Mackenzie, Norah, Olivia Schoff, Faye and Tripp Yetter, and Naomi, Paul, and Eli Detweiler. Throughout her long life, Nancy enjoyed dancing, reading, gardening, being a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, attending mass at Holy Child Church, traveling and taking cruises, drinking her favorite ovaltine, cheering for her often disappointing Phillies, and bragging about her always amazing grandchildren and great grandchildren. Daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother in law, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, Nancy was so much to so many and she will be missed by us all! A visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 4, from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the Pagano Funeral Home, 3711 Foulk Rd, Garnet Valley, PA followed by a Funeral Mass, 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Rd, Wilmington, DE. Interment will be held privately, at a later date, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
