Obituary of Sonya Ann Cowchok

Sonya Ann Cowchok, 79, was welcomed into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, early Thursday morning, May 28, 2020. Sonya was born in Charleroi, PA on June 26, 1940 to Joseph and Mary (Yuschak) Kachala.

Sonya met her "One and Only," Theodore Frank Cowchok, at a Church convention in Chicago, IL, at the Palmer House. They got married on September 21, 1963 and enjoyed 57 years of marriage. Ted and Sonya had two sons, Greg and Mark. Sonya loved her role as housewife and mother. There was nothing she would rather do than be out playing with her boys. She devoted her life to serving her family.

Sonya lived a full life. She was always looking for new adventures, she travelled to many parts of the world, including China, Italy and Switzerland. She also enjoyed every cruise that she went on, especially the cruise to Alaska. Sonya loved going to the beach. One of her favorite things was to take her family on a "tour" of Lewes, Indian River Inlet, DE and Ocean City, MD-even though they had taken these "tours" many times before. She could sit for hours watching the waves and the dolphins with her feet in the sand.

Sonya loved to cook and this was something that her family loved about her. She was famous for her meatloaf and homemade soups, not to mention her crab cakes. Sonya also loved music and dancing, especially Polka dances. She played the accordion and loved all kinds of music. She and Ted spent many weekends at Polka festivals dancing the night away. Dancing was not the only way that Sonya got her exercise. She would get up early to go to the YMCA, or would sneak a few minutes on her stationary bike in the basement. She even led Body and Soul exercise classes at her Church.

Sonya was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, DE. She was an active member of the church choir, and enjoyed fellowship with the Young-at-Heart group.

Sonya adored her granddaughter, Rebecca, whom she called Pumpkin. She looked forward to their weekly visits and encouraged Rebecca to come up with new games for them to play.

Sonya was predeceased by her parents, Joseph Kachala and Mary (Yuschak) Kachala and her brother Joseph Kachala.

She is survived by her One and Only, Theodore Frank Cowchok; her son, Gregory Theodore (Pamela) Cowchok; her son, Mark Christopher (Nancy) Cowchok; and her granddaughter, Rebecca Cowchok.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a private Graveside Service for Sonya will be LIVESTREAMED at 2:00PM from Chester Bethel Cemetery on Monday, June 1. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Chancel Choir at Faith Presbyterian Church, 720 Marsh Rd, Wilmington, DE 19803. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.paganofuneralhome.com.
