Obituary of Gerald F. Murphy

Gerald F. "Gerry" Murphy, age 82, a resident of Fox Hill Farm, Glen Mills, PA passed away on January 20, 2020. Born in New Haven, CT to John and Ann Fitzgerald Murphy, Gerry has been a longtime resident of the Fox Hill Farm community previously residing in Newtown Square, PA. He graduated from Hamden High School and received his Bachelor of Science in Management from Providence College in 1959. He was an ROTC Cadet at Providence, graduated as a 2nd Lt and went on Active Duty at Fort Benning, GA. Upon release from Active Duty, he joined the U. S. Army Reserves and was ultimately promoted to Captain. He served as Commanding Officer of Co. B 3rd Battalion 187th Infantry headquartered in Boston. Gerry worked for Travelers Insurance Company for 31 years. He was Manager of Facilities and Corporate Human Resources in New Haven, Boston, Syracuse, Portland, Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. In 1992, he became Director of Administration for the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority, during which time he served as General Manager of the Reading Terminal Market for two years. He retired in 2003. Gerry had a wicked sense of humor and a joke or a song for everyone who would listen. He loved gardening, decorative painting, exercising, bocce, and bridge. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed travelling throughout the United States and Europe. He especially enjoyed fourteen crossings of the Atlantic Ocean on the Queen Mary 2. He was a beloved father and grandfather and shared many happy memories with his family.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Anderson Murphy who died in 1986, and a brother, Robert Murphy. Gerry is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Gloria Hickey Murphy, 4 children; Jennifer (Rob) Foreman, Alison (Robert) Reyes, Todd (Monica) Murphy, and Troy (Radha) Murphy, 3 stepsons; John Neumann (Sue) Hickey, Joseph Hickey, and Conal Hickey, his devoted siblings; Carol Rogers, Joan Clifford, and Steven Murphy, his cherished grandchildren; Kirsten, Patrick, Madison, Kaitlin, Emily, Nick, Sean, Kyla, Veronica, Shane, Olivia, Conal Patrick, Andrew, and Nick.

Relatives and Friends are invited to his Viewing at St. Cornelius Church, 160 Ridge Road, Chadds Ford, PA on Saturday, January 25 from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital (www.stjude.org).
