Alan Holcombe

Obituary of Alan C. Holcombe

Alan C. Holcombe , age 89, of Glen Mills PA, peacefully passed away on October 19, 2023. He left us in the midst of his beloved Phillies playoff run. He will be cheering them on with Mom from here on out!

Born in Ridgway, PA on September 20,1934, the third son of Charles and Cacille Anderson Holcombe. Alan moved to Chester, PA as a young child, living on Taylor Terrace until he graduated Chester High in 1953. Alan then married the only love of his life, Alva in 1954 at the Crum Lynn Baptist Church. They moved on to Faith Baptist Church in Brookhaven where they spent many wonderful years with that amazing congregation.

Alan enjoyed competing in a variety of sports..bowling, softball, basketball & tennis; mostly with The Faith Baptist men.

Al and Alva had met during a Young Life event and were together for life. They moved to a small home in Brookhaven, then in 1963, they had their dream home built next door to the Brookhaven Swim Club. Shortly thereafter, Alan became the Club's President, and for many years helped make that Swim Club a great place for us kids and many more families.

Al and Alva moved to Maris Grove in 2006 as one of their Pioneer residents. They both just loved being part of the Maris Grove community.

Alan worked for the Delaware County Daily Times for 50 plus years, beginning while he was in school as a paper boy. He became the Classified Advertising Manager there, mostly focused on automobile advertisements. He loved interacting with all the car dealerships in the area, especially the Springfield Golden Mile.

He retired from The Daily Times on December 31,1999. He said he was "done working in this millennium!" Alan shortly thereafter created his second love, The United Plates of America. This craft kept him young at heart for another 16 years. Al loved being creative. He was always hustling, from a young boy selling candy bars door to door, as a young man, selling pots and pans, up until his very end, still trying to make one more map for someone. He was an amazing man.

Al's love of travel and adventure was truly an inspiration for his children. Summer vacations in 'Duke', towing the camper around the country, visiting family and making new friends were wonderful times.

In addition to his parents Alan is preceded in death by his brother, Ben Holcombe and sister, Joan Roat.

Alan's creative spirit and sense of adventure will be carried on by his children, The Four K's: Karan (Jeff) Saitto, Keith (Melissa) Holcombe, Karlene Lafferty & Kris (Roseanne) Holcombe and his 13 grandchildren: Emily Barrett, Briton ( Amy Bork) Barrett, Kelle (Ralph) Patton, Jenna (Sven) Prim- Holcombe, Gary Huntsman, Shane (David) Riser, Amanda (Nathan) Dunn, Rachel (Ray) Fuller, Shannon (Jason) Holland, Brian Lafferty, Andrew (Hannah) Holcombe, Samantha Howell, Matthew Holcombe and 21+ great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 from 1:00- 2:00PM, followed by a service at 2:00PM at the Maris Grove Chapel, 200 Maris Grove Way, Glen Mills, PA.In lieu of flowers, Alan had requested that any memorial contributions be made to the Young Life organization, without which there never would have been an Alan & Alva Holcombe.
