Obituary of Mary D. Mathieson

Mary D. Mathieson, of Glen Mills, PA, passed away at Rose Court in Maris Grove Senior Living Community. She was 103 years old.

First and always Mary was an "unshakeable" Catholic. She loved saying the Rosary and listening to Sister Angelica on the radio. In her 90s Mary would drive her brother, Spencer, and a friend to Mass each Sunday. Mary loved to travel. Her love of animals took her and a good friend to the Galapagos Islands. Her favorite trip, however, was the African Adventure she shared with her husband Mattie where they photographed all kinds of wild animals.

Mary was kind and generous, always giving and doing for others. She loved her dogs, especially her German Shorthair Pointers. While she was living at Hershey's Mill, she would take care of her neighbors' dogs while they were away on vacation. She was a wonderful knitter and made blankets for the infants in the hospital.

Mary, (Mom, Grammy) loved her family and the holidays and birthdays that brought everyone together. Her niece lived near and she enjoyed taking care of her children. Her kindness and generosity followed her to Maris Grove where she made wonderful friends with the other residents and staff. We will all miss her warm and loving spirit.

Mary is survived by her children Robert (Kathy) Marston, Michelle (Mark) Kirkland, and Ward (Scott Kessler) Marston, her brother Spencer Downing Jr., as well as 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents Spencer and Mae Patterson Downing, Her first husband Henry Marston, who passed in 1981, and her second husband Richard Mathieson, who passed in 1990.

Family and friends are invited to attend her visitation Monday August 3, 10:00-10:30 AM at St. Cornelius Catholic Church 160 Ridge Rd, Chadds Ford, PA. A funeral mass will follow at 10:30 AM. Interment will be private.
