It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Betty Anne Mitchell (nee Brady) 95, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026, in Wilmington, Delaware.

Born on November 26, 1930, in Crestwood, Kentucky, Betty was the daughter of Sue Beth Smith and Thomas Leo Brady. Raised by her mother and grandparents, she developed a lifelong passion for caring for others. After earning her nursing degree at Kentucky Baptist Hospital in Louisville, she embarked on a distinguished career as a registered nurse and later a nurse practitioner, dedicating her life to the service of others.

Betty later met and married Sam Mitchell of Canastota, New York. Together they made their home in Syracuse, where they welcomed their only child, Diane. Although Betty and Sam divorced in 1969, they remained lifelong friends.

Throughout her nursing career, Betty worked at Upstate Medical Center and Hutchings Psychiatric Center. While at Upstate, she earned her advanced degree as a Certified Nurse Practitioner (CNP), becoming an early advocate for expanding the role of nurses in direct patient care. Her vision and determination helped pave the way for greater responsibilities for advanced practice nurses. Long before such roles became commonplace, Betty recognized the invaluable contribution highly trained nurses could make in improving patient care. She was admired by colleagues and patients alike for her compassion, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Betty spent much of her life in the Manlius area, where she raised Diane and later welcomed her mother, Sue Beth, into her home, caring for her until her passing in 1997. She treasured the lifelong friendships she formed with neighbors and coworkers and was known for warmly welcoming family and friends into her home, where laughter, conversation, and hospitality were always in abundance.

A devoted patron of the arts, Betty especially enjoyed attending productions at Syracuse Stage. She also delighted in day trips, antiquing, and building a treasured collection that reflected her appreciation for history, craftsmanship, and all things Christmas.

At home, Betty found joy in life's simple pleasures—reading, pursuing hobbies, and relaxing with reruns of MASH* and The Golden Girls, always accompanied by one or more of her beloved cats. Her morning cup of coffee remained one of her favorite daily rituals and was one of the few comforts she never gave up.

Betty lived with kindness, intelligence, and quiet strength. She believed deeply in volunteerism, lifelong learning, and leaving the world a little better than she found it. Whether caring for patients, supporting friends and neighbors, or nurturing her family, she led by example with generosity, humility, and grace. Her caring spirit touched countless lives, and she will be remembered for her warmth, resilience, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.

Betty is survived by her former husband and friend, Sam Mitchell, and his wife, Midge; her daughter, Diane; her son-in-law, Richard, whom she loved as the son she never had; her grandson, Christopher, and his wife, Laura; and her cherished great-granddaughter, Annaleigh, who brought immeasurable joy to her later years.

In keeping with Betty's wishes, she will be cremated

Those wishing to honor Betty's memory may donate to the Humane Society in recognition of her lifelong love of animals.

Betty's legacy of compassion, service, and unconditional love will live on in the hearts of her family, her many friends, her former colleagues, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing her.
