Obituary of Eileen M. Shomo
Eileen M. Shomo, age 95 of Garnet Valley, PA, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Riddle Memorial Hospital.
Born and raised in Johnstown, PA, Eileen was a longtime resident of Garnet Valley, where she lived for the past 63 years, having previously resided in Ogden, PA. A hardworking journalist by profession, Eileen was also a devoted mother, grandmother, and loving wife, always bestowing unconditional love upon her family. Her life was guided by a deep and strong faith, which she instilled in her children, and she was an active and dedicated member of St.Timothy’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Aston, PA for over 60 years, singing in the choir, heading committees, and contributing to various causes and missions, her favorite being the Children’s Clothing Exchange. Known for her kindness and generosity, Eileen supported numerous charitable organizations, notably the Rachel Kohl Library and Toys for Tots. She was always willing to help others in any capacity she could. Never judgmental, Eileen’s only criteria for anyone she met was that they were good people.
Eileen was actively involved in her community, writing many human-interest stories while a reporter for the Delaware County Daily Times for over 25 years. She then transitioned to reporting for the Garnet Valley Press for over 20 years. In that role, she wrote many stories of interest about the Garnet Valley area, eventually starting a weekly column named Garnet Nuggets. Her column became synonymous with Garnet Valley, especially within the school district, reporting on anything and everything that was happening in the district. She was also very active with the Bethel Township Preservation Society, donning her colonial-era dress and bonnet for the Preservation’s various functions. She was an active member of the Red Hat Society and was known as “The Queen" and "Queen Leen” of the local chapter. Eileen was a long-time member and supporter of The Concord Township Senior Citizens Club and produced the club's Newsletter. In addition, she was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan, proudly holding season tickets from 1971 until very recently, and a dedicated Eagles fan as well.
In addition to her parents, James Weimer and Hilda Buchmann Weimer, Eileen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert L. Shomo, who passed in January 2025, whom she was married to for 73 loving years; her son, Robert J. Shomo, who passed in 2005; and her siblings, Lillian Howard, Gladys Huffman, and John Weimer.
