Mary Kathryn Miesmer

Obituary of Mary Kathryn Miesmer

Mary K. (née Parsons) Miesmer, 78, of Garnet Valley, PA (formerly of West Hartford, CT), died at home, with her daughters by her side, in the early evening on Sunday, February 2. Born on September 15, 1946, she was the eldest daughter of the late Ernest and Helen (née Lozinak) Parsons. Born in Philadelphia, Mary grew up in Darby, PA and attended Archbishop Prendergast High School. She was employed as a secretary at Electric Boat and The Travelers Insurance Company, and worked for over two decades at Eric G. Norfeldt Elementary School in West Hartford, Connecticut. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Kenneth J. Miesmer, and her younger brother, E. Michael Parsons. Mary is survived by her daughters, Sharon (Kevin) Murphy of Mount Royal, NJ; Maureen Miesmer (Joshua Hurvitz) of Washington, DC; her sister, Terry (Michael) Sakowski of Groton, CT; her sister, Donna Parsons of North Stonington, CT; her sister-in-law, Kathy (Bruce) Atwood of Shoreham, VT; and her sister-in-law Susan Miesmer of Richmond, Kentucky.

In retirement, Mary devoted her time to family and friends. She treasured time spent with her four beloved grandchildren: Jack and Kellen Murphy, and Matthew and Anna Hurvitz. She spent hours on the sidelines at their baseball and softball games, cuddling up for movies, reading books and playing word games. Mary is also survived by five nieces and nephews, three great-nieces, six great-nephews, and two incredible teenagers (and a cherished friend) who know her best as "Nana Mary." Mary was involved in Delco Indivisible and loved gathering with her dear friends and "Foxy Town" neighbors for cards, book club, Bunco and bocce games.

A memorial service will be held at a time convenient for her family. Memorial donations may be made to either the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (pulmonaryfibrosis.org) or the American Lung Association (action.lung.org). Mary was cared for by the medical staff at Riddle Hospital, Naaman's Creek Country Manor, the Pennsylvania Agency of Nurses, and caregivers with Honor Care and Visiting Angels. Her family is profoundly grateful for the incredible care provided by Main Line Health Home and Hospice nurses and staff, and for the kindness and compassion shown to Mary and her loved ones during this difficult time.
